Samsung Ordered to pay $119.6 Million to Apple

Samsung Ordered to pay $119.6 million to Apple, Jury orders Samsung to pay $119.6 million and Apple to pay $158,000 in damages for infringing each others Patents. The jury has finally reached a verdict on the second apple vs Samsung trial. In a decision that took three days to deliberate, the jury found Samsung to have intentionally infringed two Apple patents out of five.

With this verdict, Samsung has been ordered by the jury to pay Apple damages worth $119.6 million which is way lower than $2.2 billion that Apple wanted. According to Samsung’s argument, it should have paid $38.4 million in total or $1.75 per device in damages.

According to the jury’s findings, apples 647 data detectors patent was infringed by Samsung devices, and just a few Samsung devices had infringed on 721 slide-to-unlock. Earlier in January, Samsung was found by judge Koh to have infringed apples 172 autocorrect patent.

There was no infringement found by the jury on 959 universal searches or on 414 background syncing. On the other hand the Jury found out that Apple’s FaceTime caused infringement on Samsung’s 449 patent that deals with video streaming. With this Apple was ordered to pay $158,000 to the Korea Based company for damages. According to the Jury, there was no infringement on Samsung’s 239 patent by Apple. This 2nd Lawsuit began on 31st of March.

In the first lawsuit, Samsung was to pay $1.09 billion in damages as ordered, for infringement on 6 of Apples patents. This was later reduced to $890 million. Apparently google has offered to pay legal fees and cover potential damages given that some patents are features found in their Android Operating system. Though the judgment has been passed, this is not the end as both companies are expected to appeal.

Below is the statement given by Apple after the verdict:

“We are grateful to the jury and the court for their service. Today’s ruling reinforces what courts around the world have already found: That Samsung willfully stole our ideas and copied our products. We are fighting to defend the hard work that goes into beloved products like the iPhone, which our employees devote their lives to designing and delivering for our customers.”

Seemingly, Apple may demand a pay beyond the stated $119.6 million from Samsung. According to Sources, lawyers affiliated to Apple have detected an error in calculating the damage by the jury. The Galaxy S2 that had infringed apple’s 172 autocorrect patent was given no damages.
